CHAPTER NINE

NELL REMAINED diligently on her side of the bed. Dean’s greater weight caused an indentation in the mattress that would have rolled her in his direction if she hadn’t been lying on her side with a firm grip on the edge of the bed. A glance at the clock told her it was 2:11 a.m. She didn’t think she’d even closed her eyes since Dean had walked out of the bathroom wearing sweat pants and a T-shirt.

The herbal scent of his soap or shampoo drifted toward her, haunting her. And the knowledge that his long legs and his tight backside were just the sweep of a foot away from her had her nerves frayed and her breathing raspy.

Dean was tired of pretending he was asleep. Every muscle ached from his effort not to move for fear some part of his body would come in contact with some part of hers. After the past two hours of torture, he feared he would completely lose control if it did.

He wanted to make love with her. Though he hadn’t closed his eyes since he’d come to bed, he saw pictures in his mind of what it would be like. It was like the dreams he’d been having, only he wasn’t asleep. And that confused him, because it made it all seem so real.

He’d had too much of Natasha’s mystical palm reading, he decided. And too much of Nell’s philosophizing. That was why he felt disoriented, at odds with the world in which he’d finally grown comfortable again—or satisfied.

Satisfied. The word played over in his mind, and he remembered Nell warning him to watch out, that once he chose to drop doubt and cynicism, the heavens would open up to him.

He closed his eyes against the memory and prayed for sleep. Then he heard the sound—small, high, distant, plaintive. Something wild, he guessed, in the woods.

But Nell was out of bed like a shot.

“What is it?” he asked, but she was already out the bedroom door and running down the stairs.

With the door open, he heard clearly that it was a child’s wail. And it was repeated loudly. He leapt out of bed and raced after her.

As he sped down the stairs, the wail seemed to multiply and was accompanied by high shrill screams. When he reached the office, Nell already had the overhead light on and was trying to hold on to Gib, who lay on the floor, screaming and fighting her fiercely. Joey stood on the sofa bed shouting, and Gracie sat up in the recliner screaming.

Nell pinned one of Gib’s feet and groped for the other. It kicked her in the chin and she reeled backward.

“Gib! Gilbert!” Dean scooped him up off the carpet and held the child’s struggling body to him, saying his name repeatedly until Gib finally woke up and sagged against him, sobbing.

Dean reached a hand out to Nell and pulled her to her feet. “Are you all right?” he asked.

She assured him with a quick nod.
